The Monkeys & the Rhinos Had
Quite the Summer in 2010!

Last summer CK decided to mix things up a bit! In the Monkey group, which had children entering Kindergarten through those entering 2nd grade, they had themed weeks of their own, including, Dr. Seuss, Buggin' Out, Music & Movement, Pirate Island and Holiday week. The Rhinos, which had the children entering 3rd grade through 7th grade, had their own themes too! They included, Giving Back, Mad Science, Pre-Historic Times, Culture and CK Store. The Monkeys and Rhinos didn't stay separated the whole summer; the shared weeks included an old time favorites like Water Week, Amusement Week, Family Week and Cooking week.

Of those 9 exciting weeks, each group had their favorites. The Monkeys loved Pirate Island week which including pirate stories, pirate arts 'n' crafts projects, dressing up like pirates and the week's end treasure hunt through the school! The monkeys had fun with their guest reader Mrs. Miller during Dr. Seuss week, celebrating their "birthdays" and "halloween" during holiday week and their exciting visit from Dean Davis who brought a bunch of creepy crawlers during Buggin' Out week.

In the Rhino group, their favorite week was the CK Store. The kids learned how to run a store, worked on marketing, pricing and inventory. In the end of the week, they held open a store and had customers from Castleton Kids, Schodack Day Camp and even a few shoppers from the community. The kids raised a lot of money and were able to spend it how they wanted to. They decided to reward their hard work with slush puppies from Jiff-E-Mart for immediate satisfaction, but put the majority of their earnings towards the purchase of an I-Pod and speakers to enjoy for the rest of the summer! Other parts of the summer that the Rhinos loved were their mock crime scene investigation during Mad Science week, visiting the residents of Castle Hill during Giving Back week and of course the field trips to Zoom Flume and Great Escape.

The children participated in clubs throughout the summer as well. Each day they had the choice of different clubs to attend. Within these clubs the children made some great arts 'n' crafts projects, learned a lot of new sports games, worked on their fitness, built a garden, published a newspaper, learned some of the Spanish language and culture and learned some fun dances too!

The only thing we weren't sure of at Summer's end, was who had more fun, the staff, or the kids!
